Dr. Karl Swearingen, director of bands at Lakewood High School, and former associate director of the USC Trojan Marching Band, passed away Tuesday morning.
At first this was really hard for me to believe when one of my percussion friends who happens to instruct the drumline at the school told me the news after recieving multiple phone calls that he passed away. But after checking the school website to make sure it's not some prank or a rumor or anything, I'm deeply saddened that a person I know so much is gone...
From the school website:
"Lakewood's co-principals informed our school staff and students of somber news that our beloved band teacher, Mr. Swearingen, passed away at home in Redondo Beach early Tuesday morning. Student testimony supports his true love of Lakewood High School and the students of our music program from Band, Jazz Band, and Orchestra to Exploring Music classes. Mr. Swearingen will be missed by many Lancers who feel deeply at this time of loss. Mr. Swearingen, or Dr. S as he is known by students, would want those who knew him to keep a personal love and appreciation of music alive in his remembrance. Our Lancer spirit at school will do just that.
Thank you Mr. Swearingen for all you gave to our school!"
One of my many New Year's resolutions - to watch USC and Florida win their respective bowl games. With Florida State humiliating fucla for good, these are the two remaining games which matters the most. The USC Trojans will take on the Michigan Wolvorines for the tenth time in Rose Bowl history, once again a classic match-up I've always liked, while the Florida Gators is more than ready to take a bite out of the Ohio State Buckeyes from becoming the first team to win a second BCS title. Also, I'm definitely rooting for Notre Dame (nothing but respect for the Irish) against LSU in the Sugar Bowl. On the few remaining bowl games, congratulations to Troy, San Jose State, Central Michigan, Cal, Rutgers, Kentucky, South Carolina, Maryland, Texas Tech, Oregon State, and Boston College. I especially give props to Oregon State for making a huge comeback and winning it with a gamble.
GO TROJANS!!!!! BEAT THE WOLVORINES!!!!! GO GATORS!!!!! BEAT THE BUCKEYES!!!!!
Ladies and gentlemen, fucla has done it again - squandering a lead late in the game and losing to a less-talented (but a much more-motivated) team. Something only a university so concieted, loathesome, and abominable (hence U.C.L.A) school is capable of doing repeatedly as long as it exists like a plague to society. Consider the Washington and Notre Dame games those abysmal bRuins played this season... and especially the Las Vegas match against Wyoming. Their latest beneficiary - a struggling Florida State squad. After leading 27 - 23 a quarter left in the game, the bRuins offense and defense collapsed in another classic function, and the Seminoles scored 21 unanswered points for a 44 - 27 Emerald Bowl victory. Fucla still had a chance to cut Florida State's lead to three with about five minutes remaining, but the hero of the game Tony Carter made an 86 yard interception return and secured the win. Congratulations to Bobby Bowden for winning his last game, leading a team that hasn't been a much of a powerhouse as it used to be this season. Winning the bowl game and securing its 30th straight winning season, is still a happy ending. This has been another classic fucla football, where choking is what it does best.
Moral of the story... ("TUSK" please...) U-C-L-A SUCKS!!!!!
I thought Christmas is about family, spending time together, and so on... but I guess it's official all this holiday spirit DOES NOT apply within our family anymore. No Christmas tree, no colored lights, not even a decent family dinner. We're all living like complete individual beings - so much other things to worry about, we simply couldn't give a thing about it. Making matters worse, we all got into a brief argument yesterday, so we're pretty much torn apart from each other right now... I'm truly bitter, and envious - happy but envious - of all the other families who get to spend time together celebrating this great day.
Peace on Earth. Enjoy the rest of the break. I'll be better sooner or later.
